Tourism / Discovery

Located less than 15 km from the Pont du Gard and 25 km from Avignon and Arles, the town of Comps is an ideal base for exploring this beautiful region! Situated at the mouth of the Gardon river on its way to the Rhône, Comps is a great place to live, close to nature. Many towpaths are directly accessible from the area, so you can choose to go up the Gardon or head towards the Rhône for pleasant walks or cycle rides. The town has a unique natural heritage, as it is part of two Natura 2000 sites: Les costières nîmoises, with its protected habitats for birds such as the Little Bustard, and the Aval du Rhône area, which protects numerous species of flora and fauna. If your desire for nature takes you further afield, head for the town of Vallabrègues! Situated on the other side of the Rhône, the footpaths will give you a whole new perspective on the Rhône! The town's lake is ideal for a day at the water's edge, where you can fish and picnic. The town has also been renowned for its wickerwork since the 19th century, so visit the museum that traces the history of this distinctive craft. To the south of Comps is the town of Beaucaire, perfect if you want to discover the region's historic heritage! Founded in the 7th century BC, Beaucaire has survived the ages and numerous archaeological digs have been carried out in the town. Visit the four Colonnes de César, a military vestige listed as a Monument Historique, or the Abbaye de Saint-Roman, a troglodytic site also listed as a Monument Historique. You can also admire the Pont du Gard, 15 km north of the town, a famous Roman aqueduct listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which carried the empire's water over 52 kilometres 2 millennia ago.
