Tourism / Discovery
The only village in the Gard department on the left bank of the Rhône, Vallabrègues lies at the heart of the tourist triangle between Arles, Avignon and Nîmes.
Considered the capital of basketry in the early 20th century, Vallabrègues remains famous for its exceptional crafts. Nearly 450 basket makers settled here to practise their craft and work the wicker that grows along the Rhône. The last factory closed its doors in 1981, but you can still visit the museum, which traces the history of basket-making, and try your hand at the art in a workshop.
Other craftsmen make this town timeless: discover the work of one of the last chair makers in France, awarded the "Patrimoine Vivant" label. As for local culinary specialties, there's plenty of choice: fruit, vegetables and saucissons are among the local favourites.
The Vallabrègues lake at the northern entrance to the village is a haven of peace and greenery, ideal for a lunch break with its picnic tables. This is the ideal place for a quiet moment, to have fun with the children or for a fishing session (pike, trout, pike-perch) or simply for a mountain bike ride on the "De la vigne à vélo" loop.
Relax under the plane trees in the village's two main squares: near the village hall and opposite the covered market.
They both add to the Provencal character of this town in the Gard, especially in summer when the cicadas sing! This is a favourite spot for pétanque enthusiasts.
