Tourism / Discovery
Between Cahors and Rodez, stop off in the pretty medieval town of Villeneuve d'Aveyron.
Take a stroll through the narrow cobbled streets of the village, where you'll be able to see the typical architecture of the bastide towns. Pass under the village's High Gate, also known as the Soubirane Tower, and make your way to the central square, the Place des Conques. Admire the medieval and Renaissance houses with their pointed arches, and enjoy a break in the shade of the chestnut trees. Every Sunday morning, the square plays host to the colourful stalls of the Villeneuve market.
In a pretty typical house, visit the Maison de la Photo. It houses the permanent exhibition of Jean-Marie Périer's photographs of the golden age of rock.
Starting out from the village, a number of beautiful nature walks await you. You can take a guide with you to explore the flora and fauna of the Causse de Villeneuve in greater depth.
Nearby, don't miss the pre-Romanesque church at Toulongergues, 5 km from Villeneuve. It is open to visitors in July and August only.
The prehistoric cave at Foissac, a Monument Historique 8 km from the area, is also well worth a visit. It is situated on a limestone plateau overlooking the Lot valley.
