Nestling at the crossroads of the Landes de Gascogne and the Basque Country, Castets is a peaceful stopover just twenty kilometres from the Atlantic beaches.
Take a stroll through the picturesque streets of the historic centre, where you will discover traditional architecture and handicraft shops selling quality local products. Visit the church of Saint-Pierre, a real gem of Gothic architecture dating from the 12th century and bearing witness to the region's rich religious past. Opposite the town hall, a giant 40-metre sequoia overlooks the square. Its distinctive trunk splits into 6 sections, revealing a very thick bark. The tree was even awarded the "Arbre Remarquable" label in 2006.
History enthusiasts can visit the Biscarrosse artillery battery, which offers a poignant insight into the German occupation, with its bunkers and cannons. It provides a powerful immersion in the Second World War.
As you explore the surroundings of Castets, you'll discover unspoilt nature and breathtaking scenery. Around 30 kilometres away, the Étang Noir nature reserve offers hikers the chance to immerse themselves in a unique ecosystem, where a diversity of flora and fauna thrive in an unspoilt setting.
The simple pleasures of the coast are also within easy reach, with the fine sandy beaches of Saint-Girons. For water sports enthusiasts, you can windsurf, stand-up paddle or surf in this incredible setting. You can also go kayaking on the river La Palue.
Covering 340 hectares, Lake Léon is the largest lake in the Landes region. It is a haven of peace with two beaches, wilderness areas and hiking trails. Between forest paths and cycle tracks, Lake Léon offers a refreshing break on the Vélodyssée. There is a playground for children and a beach with plenty of activities for the older ones, including stand-up paddle, canoeing, windsurfing, pedalos, optimists and dinghies, etc.
Whether you're looking for a cultural getaway, a nature outing or a relaxing break on the beach, Castets is at the crossroads of the Landes region's many delightful spots.
