The Black Périgord, home to several archaeological sites like caves, museums, parks, and so forth, is the cradle of prehistory in France. Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil, right at the heart of the Dordogne, is none other than the World Capital of Prehistory! Dotted with remains left by the very first humans, the village is home to an impressive variety of sites dating back millions of years. Through an extensive collection of artefacts, tools, and bibliographical resources, the exhibitions on display at the National Prehistory Museum and the ‘Pôle International de la Préhistoire’ illustrate the evolution of humankind. For more immersive visits, the Combarelles and Font-de-Gaume caves reveal a host of admirably preserved engravings and paintings. The village is also home to other medieval sites that bear witness to the history of the last few centuries, such as the fortified church of Tayac and the old forges. The troglodyte setting, narrow streets and cliffs give the village its authentic charm. The Château de Commarque, overlooking the Beune valley, is a forgotten but mysterious medieval fortress. Built in the 12th century, it originally served as a protective rampart for the abbey of Sarlat. Today, it is a splendid monument that hosts many events throughout the year and offers a wide range of activities: archery, stone carving, medieval calligraphy, abseiling down the dungeon, escape game... There are many footpaths and itineraries to follow to discover the Vézère Valley: the Mouthe, 7 Tours, Micoque and Gorges d'enfer, etc. All start in the village and take you to some of the most beautiful spots on foot or by bike. The valley can also be explored on horseback and even by canoe or boat along the Vézère.
