Set in the heart of Lower Normandy, the village of Grandcamp-Maisy is located 60 km from Caen, along the Bay of Veys. This coastal destination has been spared the hustle and bustle of seaside resorts and offers a natural charm marked by numerous historical events.
Just next to the D-Day landing beaches, one of the sites marked by the events of 6 June 1944 is Pointe du Hoc, an important site of German fortifications on the coast. Here you can discover the artillery battery with its fire direction post, its bunkers, its shelters... Immerse yourself in the history of this site through the visitor centre and the information panels provided.
Other sites in the surroundings are also marked by the history of the D-Day landings, such as Omaha Beach and the Maisy Battery, a maritime defence fortification. Visit 3 km of trenches, tunnels and other underground constructions, once an integral part of the military zone.
Listed as ‘National Heritage Sites’, the two islands of Saint-Marcouf can be seen from the shore. The first, Île de Terre, is an ornithological reserve that is home to seagulls and cormorans. Berthing and anchorage are prohibited. The second, Île du Large, houses a military fort dating back to the Napoleonic era.
The second largest fishing port in Calvados, Grandcamp-Maisy is a great place to discover trawlers, water sports and beach activities for all the family (seafood gathering, supervised swimming, playground...).
The town is built around its harbour and its long beach. Try some fresh fish and all kinds of shellfish (the scallop being the star of this destination) in the many restaurants lining the harbour and seafront. This dynamic place has managed to preserve its authentic, peaceful character, typical of a small Norman town. Its activity depends on the tides, which will also punctuate your fishing sessions on the beach.
The Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Natural Park is a true paradise for hiking lovers. Whether on foot, by bike, by kayak or even on horseback, this area offers a wide variety of plant and animal species. The Voie Verte de la Liberté (Freedom Greenway) is a great way to enjoy the beauty of this environment. Departing from Grandcamp-Maisy, it leads to Vierville-sur-Mer, 14 km further on, and offers some breathtaking views.
