Ideally situated in the heart of the Lozère department, of which Mende is the capital, this town enjoys an enchanting natural setting.
The town grew as the Lot valley expanded, at the foot of Mount Mimat, which offers a remarkable panorama of the surroundings. The cliffs of the Causse de Mende border the town which, along with Millau, Lodève, Ganges and Alès, are five gateway towns to the Causses and Cévennes, an incredible region listed as a World Heritage Site for its landscapes shaped by vast Mediterranean pastures.
The history of Mende is told in every cobbled street in the historic centre, dominated by its immense Gothic cathedral. The town has a rich heritage that you can easily discover on your visits and walks. The cathedral, the Gévaudan Museum, the town hall, the Notre-Dame bridge, the 19th-century pharmacy and the half-timbered houses are all well worth a visit during your stay.
Mende is the ideal starting point for exploring the Lozère department, including the Aubrac, Margeride, Cévennes and Grands Causses. Lozère is also France's top department for hiking trails. No fewer than 28 trails are available in Mende, offering you an incredible outdoor playground! The town is also a popular destination for its FFC-approved mountain bike trails.
