Situated between Poitiers (60 km) and Cholet (70 km), the town of Airvault boasts a rich heritage and charming landscapes that you can discover on your walks. Airvault deserves its "Petite Cité de Caractère" label, thanks in particular to its covered market halls and the eclectic architecture of the houses that line its streets. The Augustins abbey, founded at the end of the 10th century, is now home to a church, a major building in the history of Romanesque art. Its majestic bell tower rises between the two hills that surround the town. Part of the building houses the Jacques Guidez museum, which exhibits a fine collection of objects relating to the world of education, childhood and rural life. It is open from April to September. The castle of Airvault dates back to the 11th century and proudly displays its walls with two towers and a keep that marks out the urban environment. Historian Henri Bodin describes it as "one of the rarest examples of 11th-century military architecture". The Vallée de Neuze lookout offers a view of the cement works quarry. Information panels explain the geological context of the quarry, allowing you to learn more about the site on your own. Several signposted footpaths invite you to take long walks or cycle rides. The Aldéarde paths begin in the town centre and take you along the banks of the Thouet river, passing by monuments. This route combines historical discoveries with relaxation in the heart of nature. The 12 km 'La biodiversité ordinaire' discovery trail features 44 information panels about the flora and fauna along the way.
