Tourism / Discovery
Located 80 km southeast of Paris and 16 km from Fontainebleau, Nemours is a small province with a rich heritage dating back to the Palaeolithic era.
The Île-de-France Museum of Prehistory looks back on thousands of years of history. Its role is to protect, preserve and spread the archaeological remains discovered in the region. Located in the middle of a bucolic forest with multiple archaeological sites, the museum houses a collection of more than 2 millions objects mainly from the region and its surroundings.
The Château-Musée of Nemours - on the left bank of the Loing - is a must-see: built in the 12th century, it is one of the only town castles in the region. Discover the 20,000 works on display, mainly graphic arts, paintings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum also uses virtual reality to take you on a journey through history during your visit.
Whether on foot, by bike, by boat or even on horseback, the former Gâtinais capital is a perfect spot for your outings. The town is crossed by the EuroVelo 3 cycle route (from Norway to Spain). Follow the towpath along the Loing for a stroll in a quiet and bucolic setting. The forest of Nemours is also a pleasant place for a walk in nature: follow the GR13 hiking trail to discover old quarries and viewpoints.
Visit the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste listed as a ‘’National Heritage Site’’. Since its construction in 1170, it has undergone numerous renovations and now consists of three different parts from three different eras.
Famous authors have spent time in the town of Nemours. Honoré de Balzac was probably inspired by the city in his novel Ursule Mirouët. At the same time, in 1844, Victor Hugo stayed at the hotel ‘’L’Écu de France’’. It was after his stay that he described the parish of Nemours in his travel diaries as ‘’as rare, as complete, as beautiful as the cathedrals one might say’’.
