Tourism / Discovery
Cross the bridge or the legendary Passage du Gois (causeway accessible only at low tide) to stop off on the island of Noirmoutier. The Plage des Dames and its transparent water, its harmonious curve and its fine sand will definitely plunge you into a heavenly setting.
Between land and sea, discover an island with exceptional culinary specialities: oysters, fish, potatoes… You can enjoy the local products as much as the landscapes! It is also a perfect place to go fishing!
Known as the Island of Mimosas, Noirmoutier has an almost infinite variety of settings for your walks: start with the salt marshes, which cover almost a third of the island. This white gold has been part of the landscape since the 5th century. Noirmoutier is also called the Island of a hundred mills, as many of which are still there as a reminder of one of the main historical activities, although they are no longer in operation today.
Stroll in the shade of the trees, in the heart of the many forests: the Barbâtre forest, the Bois des Eloux, the Bois de la Chaise… One of the best ways to enjoy the whole island is to ride your bike. 83 kilometers of cycle paths are dedicated to you, so that you don’t miss a single corner. Three discovery tours (Vendée Vélo) are signposted: « Between beaches and harbour » (19 kilometers), « Between marshes and mills » (18,5 kilometers) and « Between Gois and forest » (23 kilometers).
One of the must-sees is the Sebastopol polder. Located at the entrance to the island, it is a protected site classified as as « Regional Nature Reserve ». Definitely a privileged meeting point for nature lovers to observe the birds and to walk in the fresh air.
Curious about the island’s past and how it has evolved over the centuries? A museum reveals the history of Noirmoutier in the grounds of its castle dating from the 12th century.
