Description

Situated at the gateway to the Brière Regional Natural Park, 20 km north-west of Saint-Nazaire, how can we not mention the famous Guérande salt marshes?  Set between land and sea, the town has been awarded the ‘Site Remarquable du Goût’ label (remarkable site of taste). Its 2,000 hectares of marshland offer wonderful scenery both for the eyes and taste buds, as Guérande's gastronomic heritage is based on salt, shellfish and fish. Beef is also an old tradition in the Brière marshes. Whether on foot or by bike, follow the paths or guided tours through the salt marshes. This fragile but spectacular environment is a great place to explore all year round, to understand how nature works through the seasons.  Cherished by the Dukes of Brittany, Guérande and its ramparts are listed as a National Heritage Site. The Porte Saint-Michel marks the main entrance and symbolizes the power of the Dukes. The Notre-Dame-la-Blanche chapel is the oldest building of the inner town and was the seat of an urban parish in the Middle Ages. Don't miss the Collegiate Church of Saint-Aubin, a majestic landmark in the centre of the town. The Guérande peninsula offers lots of cycling paths (‘Du sel à la mer’, ‘De la cité médiévale aux marais’, etc) and walking trails (‘Les Coteaux’, ‘Rand’O au fil de l’eau’, ‘Les Boucles de Colveux’, etc). The Mail is also a very pleasant promenade on a mound of land outside the ramparts. A quiet, shady spot, perfect for enjoying a picnic while admiring the view over the town. At night, Guérande is adorned with pretty lights that highlight its exceptional heritage.
