Tourism / Discovery
The fortified village of Roquefort, the ‘fort on the rock’, built on a rocky spur, is located 24 km north of Mont-de-Marsan.
The main edifice of the destination and undoubtedly the church Sainte-Marie, listed as a National Heritage Site. Built in the 12th century, it has become a fortress overlooking the river and the town. It boasts exceptional architecture, with its square keep and the remains of its monastery and convent.
At the heart of the traditions of the Landes and Gascony regions, the Roquefort bullring hosts the famous races during local festivities. Summer is the ideal time to visit this incredible site on a guided tour led by volunteers from the Cercle Taurin.
The town is an important stopover for pilgrims following the Vézelay route on the way to Santiago de Compostela. The Sarbazan itinerary, starting from Roquefort, offers a 6.3 km route through the countryside between the two villages. Enjoy this trail surrounded by nature and heritage sites.
From the town centre, follow the ramparts to the Estampon river, which you can also enjoy on a canoe outing. If you are lucky, you may even spot a family of mink on the riverbanks. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy the beautiful spots between the Cardine and the Clerc bridges and catch trout.
