Tourism / Discovery

In the heart of the Deux-Sèvres department, discover the town of Sauzé-Vaussais! It is ideally located to explore the Great West, being 45 km from the Marais Poitevin, 55 km from Niort, and 60 km from Poitiers and Angoulême, waiting for your visit ! However, Sauzé-Vaussais is not just a simple stopover, as it is a pleasant town to live in that is worth a visit. The region has long been the site of several conflicts over the centuries. As such, take a stroll through the many buildings constructed over the decades and admire the Church of Saint-Junien de Vaussais and its Romanesque parish, classified as a Historical Monument. Probably built in the 9th century, it was destroyed during the religious wars, after which King Louis XIV ordered its restoration. If you're a fan of urban legends, head to the Saint-Junien Fountain, the location of a 6th-century tale that you will discover on-site. The town’s dovecote is also worth a look ! Now rehabilitated as a rest area for vacationers, it could accommodate more than 500 pigeons after its construction in the 15th century. This building was connected to the Royal Post, which ensured an efficient communication network every 7 leagues (340 km). Craving greenery ? The region is also ideal for hiking. Head up to Montalembert and admire the red clay that makes up the soil as you stroll along the chestnut trees that line the paths. You can also head towards Lorigné to combine heritage discoveries with fauna and flora. The Bois Meunier water body can also be a nice escape if you wish to be by the water. Fishing is allowed throughout the length of the pond. For the more adventurous, the town also offers Paddle courses in the summer.
