Tourism / Discovery
Situated between Rochefort and La Rochelle, the peninsula offers panoramic views over the islands of Oléron, Madame and Aix.
The charm of this peninsula has been preserved unspoilt, offering an immersion in the past that is sure to win you over.
The castle of Fouras - also known as Fort Vauban - was built in the 11th century to control the Charente estuary. Overlooking the magnificent Grande Plage of Fouras-les-Bains, this remarkable building now houses the Musée d'Histoire Régionale de Fouras.
It faces the famous Fort Boyard, which you can admire from the ocean. Approach it from a boat and you might just catch a glimpse of Père Fouras (an emblematic character of the famous Fort Boyard TV show)!
Follow the trails and breathe in the fresh sea air during your walks or bike rides. You can stroll along the coastal path from Fort Vauban to Fort La Pointe and admire the wonderful views over the bay.
You can also enjoy the fine sandy beaches to relax or try your hand at water sports such as catamaran or optimist sailing, windsurfing, windfoil and wingfoil.
Note that the Grande Plage, Plage Sud and Plage Nord are supervised in July and August.
As for local cuisine, try the oysters in an oyster bar or in one of the town’s restaurants. Fouras is the leading oyster spat collection in France. Thanks to the fresh waters of the Charente and its temperature, oyster farming is very important in the region.
