Tourism / Discovery

15 km north of Caen, Hermanville-sur-Mer is one of the 4 seaside resorts in the urban community of Caen la Mer. Hermanville-sur-Mer has retained its friendly, family atmosphere, which can be seen in its many monuments. History plays an important role in Hermanville-sur-Mer, especially following the Second World War. The ‘Le Matelot’ monument was erected on the Place du Courbet as a tribute to the Norwegian sailors who fell just before the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. The Royal Artillery monument, the Royal Navy monument and several plaques commemorate this dark period in Normandy. Located behind Sword Beach, the town also provides access to the British cemetery, where more than 1,000 soldiers are buried. Other buildings worth seeing include the 10th-century church of Saint-Pierre, the chapelle de la Brèche and the Mare Saint-Pierre well. Enjoy the fresh air as you stroll along Hermanville's long sandy beaches. With the fashion for sea bathing, Calvados has seen a huge wave of villa building along its coastline. You can admire a number of them and discover the ‘neo-Norman’ style, which was born in 1882 with the introduction of faux timber-framed buildings. The beach, lined with villas, offers a relaxing setting over several kilometres. In summer, two lifeguard posts ensure your safety.
