La Puebla de Sanabria is a charming mountain village of the Zamora province in the Castilla y León region, 20 km from the northern border with Portugal. 15 km from the campsite, Lake Sanabria is the largest glacial lake on the Iberian Peninsula. Part of the protected park of the same name, it is surrounded by a multitude of landscapes: cirques, valleys, forests, glaciers, etc. The lake's largest beach, Viquela, is one of many ideal for swimming in summer. Whether you are swimming, on a boat or on foot, Lake Sanabria offers a warm, green and mountainous atmosphere. As in the north of France, the parade of giants is a local tradition, this one dating back to 1948. The collection can be seen all year round in the Museum of Giants and Bigheads, in the historic centre of the town, and is considered to be one of the best in Spain. The parade takes place on 7 and 8 September, where you can see them strolling and dancing through the streets as they accompany the Virgin in her solemn procession. Visit one of the town's most remarkable monuments: the Castillo de los Condes de Benavente. Set at an altitude of almost 1,000 m, enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view from its keep. The steep, narrow streets and the coats of arms on the facades and balconies add to the charm of this historic artistic ensemble. The generous orchards of Puebla de Sanabria promise tasty discoveries and quality local produce. For instance, beans and cabbage are the basis of the Sanabrés broth. Other specialities to taste: octopus, trout and, of course, cod, all of which have pride of place in Sanabrés cuisine.
