Tourism / Discovery
Situated 25 km north of Chalon-sur-Saône, Verdun-sur-le-Doubs is an ancient fortified city at the confluence of the Saône and Doubs rivers.
A major centre of river and commercial activities, the village has long been the scene of historic conflicts. The ramparts and different towers (Echauguette, Echevins, Marguerite de Busseil) bear witness to its eventful past. To discover all these buildings, follow the yellow fish painted on the ground: starting from the tourist office, this trail takes you around the main sites.
Verdun-sur-le-Doubs is part of the ‘Pays des Trois Rivières’, thanks to its location at the confluence of the Saône, Doubs and Dheune rivers. This destination is therefore ideal for fishing lovers: catfish, pike, carp, pike-perch and many other species can be found along the fishing route that varies greatly depending on the river (current, temperatures…).
Heading upstream to the confluence of the Saône and Doubs rivers, you will come across the Capitainerie, a lovely marina with a balcony terrace overlooking the river and offering a superb view of the Ile du Château. Canoe rental is available at the entrance to the campsite.
The Ile du Château owes its name to the castle that is said to have been built in the 12th century and then destroyed in the 15th century. Having once housed a garden around its villa and an agricultural park, the island is now a preserved area partly occupied by a flooded forest, typical of the Val de Saône.
The Voie Bleue and EuroVélo 6 are two cycle routes that join together to cross the village of Verdun-sur-le-Doubs on a single route. Admire the green countryside as you cycle past, while enjoying the refreshing waters of the Saône.
