Préfailles is one of the oldest seaside resorts of the Atlantique coast. It was proclaimed as a town in 1908 after its integration with La Plaine. Its motto "Qui y mouille y reste" (Those who here gets wet, here stays) summarizes the city's close link with the sea.
With an area of 488 hectares, Préfailles has a 8 kilometers long shore (primarily facing south, across from the Vendean islands of Noirmoutier and Pillier) and has a charming landscape alternating golden sand beaches and small coves and rocks, a treasure to be discovered… Its coastal aspect is seen all over its territory and its 2 km of ocean borders.
The territories of La Plaine sur Mer and Préfailles form the peninsula of Saint-Gildas which separates the Loire’s estuary from Bourgneuf Bay. Sitting on the western end of this region, the Pointe Saint-Gildas is a known tourist destination (the second most-visited place in Loire-Atlantique), and shows a wild and preserved coast, with an exceptional view of the ocean.
